HE Haiyu: Hide-and-Seek Club: Curated by WANG Yaoli

Overview

BONIAN SPACE is pleased to announce Hide-and-Seek Club, the first solo exhibition by He Haiyu from March 2 to April 1, 2024. Curated by Wang Yaoli, the exhibition features over twenty of the artist's recent paintings.

He Haiyu's recent paintings are based on observations of her emotional fluctuations, as well as her "reprocessing" of absurd, fragmented, and humorous life images that appear on social networks. The content of her works revolves around "life" and "humor," employing theatrical and fictional narrative arrangements. She has created a series of paintings with wooden figures as the main subject. In addition to wooden figures, trees and animals are the other most critical inspirational elements in her works.

She enjoys presenting the humor that pervades reality, often breaking conventional logic in a non-serious manner. She straightforwardly portrays the complex and fluctuating emotions stemming from human nature on canvas with comic-like soft lines, complemented by extensive flat graffiti and finely detailed depictions of part area, creating visually contrasting layers.

"Hide-and-Seek" is widely known as a folk game due to its simple rules and the simultaneous excitement and fun it provides. When players hide, they focus more on themselves than others; during the game, there is no need for more interaction with other players, making it beloved by many introverts. The title of this exhibition is set as Hide-and-Seek Club, which not only quotes the artist's reference to the "Hide-and-Seek" game in her works but also juxtaposes the dramatic effect generated by placing "club," a social gathering place for entertainment activities, alongside "Hide-and-Seek," perfectly fitting He Haiyu's humorous and whimsical views.
