BONIAN SPACE is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in China, Dust in the Dream, by the artist Zang Muqing from July 1st to August 1st, 2023. Curated by Wang Yaoli, the exhibition presents the artist's recent works in different media, including mixed-media paintings and alternative photography processes.
The exhibition features Zang Muqing's two series, Small Grove and The Perspective of Memory, presenting his paintings and photography. From the perspectives of "artificial objects" and "natural objects," he examines and collects materials such as dust, soil, rainwater, spring water, fossils, meteorites, ashes, bones, and glass. He records, recombines, and translates everyday landscapes, encounters, and dream objects, using alternative photography processes such as tempera, gum bichromate printing, and anthotype printing, which serve as evidence to elucidate his creative concepts.
Within the frames filled with a serene yet unsettling atmosphere, Zang Muqing's paintings and photography encapsulate the struggles and pursuits of destiny. Drawing upon the sensitive perception of oneself towards the external environment as the foundation for constructing images, he studies the self to explore certain commonalities and essences of humanity. Simultaneously, he adheres to the most authentic origins of artistic creation, proactive collecting, processing, and utilizing raw media materials. Ultimately, his artworks become concrete manifestations of central creative themes such as time and space, life and death, the mundane and the sublime, memory and imagination, and consciousness and behavior.
