A Clean, Well-Lighted Place comes from Hemingway’s short novel of the same title, which narrates a “waiting for Godot” kind of story.

Two restaurant attendants waited in the mid-night for their last customer, an old man who was drinking alone to leave the restaurant. The old man was neatly dressed and well behaved, drank one cup after another…the younger waiter became extremely impatient while the older showed his sympathy towards him. The seemingly vague dialogue between the characters encloses a discussion of existence and nihility. This small, but clean and bright Spanish restaurant seems to be the only place for the elderly to fight fear, night, and death.

The epidemic has accelerated our fallen. For artists using painting as the medium, the white canvas is like a clean and well-lighted place to seek asylum and provoke confrontation. Painting itself is not only full of nihility, but also its breakthroughs in multiple levels. We invited 10 young artists to the exhibition. Instead of sticking to a grand discussion, the younger generation of artists carried out more exploration and deliberation on the surrounding environment and the refraction of their subconsciousness.

Says the painter Jean Dubuffet, “I am convinced that any table can be for each of us a landscape as inexhaustible as the whole Andes range……” This seemingly disordered perspective is simply a breakthrough in the established methods for artistic creation that expresses the captured of subtle things. It is a common concern of these artists, whose strokes shuttle between virtual scenes and true stories, reminding us of the certainty of daily existence beyond the nihility framed by the times.
